Former India spinner Murali Kartik believes CSK icon MS Dhoni may have extended his IPL career beyond the ideal point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)<\/a> icon MS Dhoni may have said he\u2019ll take 5\u20136 months to decide on his IPL future, but former India spinner Murali Kartik believes the legendary captain may have already overstayed his welcome in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite ending their IPL 2025 campaign with a commanding 83-run win over Gujarat Titans, CSK finished last on the points table for the first time ever. Dhoni, 43, was underwhelming with the bat, often coming in too late and struggling to finish matches. His inconsistent performances and unusual batting positions \u2014 even walking in at No. 9 \u2014 sparked debate throughout the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Kartik said, \u201cAs much as the world loves Dhoni… a day has to come when they have to go. Sometimes you don\u2019t want the ones who love you to say, \u2018You\u2019ve overstayed your welcome\u2019 \u2014 even if it\u2019s MS Dhoni.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Dhoni remains unpredictable: \u201cI\u2019ve always said he doesn\u2019t allow his left hand to know what his right hand is thinking. It\u2019s hard to know what\u2019s on his mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the post-match presentation, Dhoni gave no concrete update, saying only that he\u2019s headed back to Ranchi and will think about his future later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Midway through the IPL 2025 season, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were dealt a blow when regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to a hairline fracture on his elbow. MS Dhoni stepped in as the stand-in skipper, reigniting speculation about his future role with the franchise.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to a fan query about whether Dhoni could captain CSK in IPL 2026, former India spinner Murali Kartik clarified that the captaincy transition to Ruturaj was intentional and should not be reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the main reasons the captaincy was handed to Ruturaj was to pass the baton,\u201d Kartik said. \u201cEven if Dhoni comes back \u2014 and with Dhoni, you never really know \u2014 I don\u2019t think they will take the captaincy away from Ruturaj.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed the importance of giving young leaders time and space to grow: \u201cThose are huge shoes to fill. You have to allow people to find their own shoes. Don\u2019t ask them to fill MS Dhoni\u2019s shoes \u2014 let them make their own and grow into them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kartik also reflected on Dhoni\u2019s underwhelming performances this season, particularly his struggles against spin and his difficulty in rotating strike, noting that the veteran was a \u201cpale shadow\u201d of his former self in IPL 2025.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
