Rohit Sharma explains why his parents choose not to watch his matches live at the stadium.

As the captain of India’s Test and ODI teams, Rohit Sharma has become one of the most iconic players to represent Mumbai on the international stage. A right-handed batsman, he began his cricket journey in Mumbai and has since evolved into one of the best openers, as well as a respected leader of the national side.

Rohit Sharma’s parents have only seen him play at the stadium on two occasions.

Rohit Sharma frequently plays at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, which also serves as the home ground for his IPL franchise, the Mumbai Indians (MI). He has been a part of the team since the 2013 season and continues to play for MI in IPL 2025.

While Sharma’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, and daughter, Samaira, are often seen cheering from the stands during both India’s matches and MI’s IPL games, his parents have rarely been spotted at the stadium.

Rohit Sharma Explains Why His Parents Never Watch His Matches at the Stadium

In an interview with The Indian Express, Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma opened up about why his parents, Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma, never attend his matches at the stadium. According to Rohit, his parents feel too nervous when watching him play live, which is why they prefer to watch his games from the comfort of their home.

“They usually prefer watching matches from home because they get too nervous at stadiums. They don’t like leaving the house much. But when a stand with my name is inaugurated at Wankhede Stadium, you have to come and sit in it,” said Rohit.

Interestingly, the Indian opener revealed that his parents have only visited the stadium twice. The first occasion was when Rohit Sharma captained India for the first time against Sri Lanka at Wankhede in 2017. The second time was more recent, when a stand was named after him at the stadium.

Earlier this month, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honored Rohit Sharma by dedicating a stand to him at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, acknowledging his immense contribution to Indian cricket. Rohit’s leadership led India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Meanwhile, Rohit has been in great form for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025. After a slow start to the season, where he struggled with low scores, Rohit Sharma made a strong comeback in his last two games. He scored back-to-back fifties against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), leading MI to comfortable victories.
