IPL 2025 Suspended as Tensions Rise, Playoff Race Still Wide Open

IPL 2025

The IPL 2025 season was abruptly halted just before reaching its thrilling business end, with playoff spots still up for grabs and an intense battle for the Orange Cap set to unfold. The suspension, announced on Friday, followed rising tensions between India and Pakistan after the terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.

Currently, Gujarat Titans lead the standings, followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Punjab Kings, and Mumbai Indians. Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants also remain in contention for the playoffs.

With 13 league-stage games left once the tournament resumes, here’s a brief recap of the top stat leaders from the first 58 matches of the season.

Most wickets

The Purple Cap race has seen impressive performances, with two bowlers already reaching 20 wickets in what has been a strong comeback year for bowlers after a challenging 2024 season. Prasidh Krishna of Gujarat Titans and Noor Ahmad of CSK are tied at 20 wickets, but Krishna’s superior economy rate puts him in the top spot. Krishna has been exceptional after missing two full IPL seasons, playing his way back into contention for the Indian team. Meanwhile, Noor has been one of the few bright spots for a struggling Chennai Super Kings. Josh Hazlewood follows closely with 18 wickets.

Most runs

The Orange Cap race is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling in IPL history. Suryakumar Yadav leads the pack with 510 runs, but he’s closely followed by four other players with over 500 runs. Sai Sudharsan is just one run behind Yadav, while his Gujarat Titans teammate, Shubman Gill, is also in hot pursuit. Virat Kohli sits at 505 runs, and Jos Buttler completes the group with exactly 500 runs. With all these players in exceptional form, the battle for the Orange Cap is wide open. Not to be forgotten, Prabhsimran Singh, who had 487 runs before the PBKS vs DC match was called off, could have pushed into the top spot had the game been completed.

Most sixes

A total of 970 sixes have been struck in IPL 2025, with Nicholas Pooran leading the charge. The Lucknow Super Giants’ star has hit 34 sixes, a stellar achievement after a blistering start to the season. However, his momentum has slowed in recent matches. After blasting 31 sixes in the first 6 games, Pooran has managed just 3 in his last five, including no sixes in four of those matches. Despite this dip, he still holds a significant lead, though players like Priyansh Arya (28 sixes) and Shreyas Iyer (27 sixes) are closing the gap. Riyan Parag and Suryakumar Yadav round out the top five with 26 sixes each.
