Former India batter Ajay Jadeja did not hold back in expressing his disapproval after Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill dismissed Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s historic 101-run blitz as a “lucky day.” Playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025, the 14-year-old smashed a century off just 35 balls at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, becoming the youngest-ever centurion in the history of the T20 tournament.

Suryavanshi’s knock was a spectacle, featuring eight fours and 11 sixes, leading Rajasthan Royals to an eight-wicket victory. The hosts chased down 210 runs with 25 balls to spare, leaving Gujarat Titans deflated. After the loss, when asked about his thoughts on Suryavanshi’s remarkable performance, Shubman Gill referred to it as the young batter’s “lucky day,” suggesting that the left-hander had simply made the most of his chances.

“It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day,” Gill said during his post-match comments to the broadcaster.

Ajay Jadeja was visibly displeased with Shubman Gill dismissing Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s knock so lightly. The former India batter appeared to have more to say, but was interrupted by the post-match presentation. “But for a 14-year-old to have that belief in himself, the amount of confidence he has, and to take it that far — even if some player on television just said, ‘Oh, it was just his lucky day,’” Jadeja remarked while speaking to JioStar.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi lights up Sawai Mansingh Stadium

Vaibhav Suryavanshi showed no fear or respect for senior India bowlers like Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, taking them on right from the very first ball.

In the fourth over, bowled by Ishant Sharma, Suryavanshi smashed a staggering 28 runs. In another over from Karim Janat, he hammered 30 runs. Partnering with Yashasvi Jaiswal, he put on a remarkable 166-run stand for the opening wicket. Suryavanshi finally walked back after scoring 101 runs off 38 balls, dismissed by Prasidh Krishna.

“All of us who played cricket dreamt of cricket in a certain way, whether it was in our drawing rooms or playing with friends. This is what you dream of. At 14 and 15, we must have all had different dreams, but this is the one you truly imagine. This young man has gone out there and lived that dream. There’s power in what he does. He’ll be analyzed a hundred times,” said Ajay Jadeja.

Jadeja also praised the coaching team: “After seven overs, there’s a strategic timeout. Great credit goes to Rahul Dravid, Vikram Rathour, and the team for allowing him to just keep flowing and blossoming. And honestly, it’s the mindset that blows me away more than anything.”
