The MCA has given its approval for the Rohit Sharma Stand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Rohit Sharma guided India to the ICC Champions Trophy title earlier this year. In recognition of his contributions to Indian cricket, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has approved a proposal to name a stand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after the Indian captain. The decision was officially passed during the MCA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Tuesday, April 15.

The MCA has given its approval for the Rohit Sharma Stand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

With this honour, Sharma joins an elite group of Indian cricket legends including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant, and Dilip Vengsarkar who already have stands named after them at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Currently serving as India’s captain in both Test and ODI formats, Sharma has achieved remarkable milestones since the start of 2024. Under his leadership, India lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in the Caribbean. Following the victory, the team was felicitated at the Wankhede Stadium by the BCCI. Earlier, in February, Sharma also led India to the ICC Champions Trophy title in the UAE.

Wankhede Stadium to Feature a Stand Named After Rohit Sharma

In a recent development, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has officially approved the naming of one of the stands at the iconic Wankhede Stadium after Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma. The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 will now be known as the Rohit Sharma Stand.

Alongside this, two other cricketing personalities will be honoured with stands in their name — former BCCI secretary and veteran politician Sharad Pawar, and the late Ajit Wadekar, former Indian cricket captain.

In a statement, the MCA confirmed:
“Another key resolution passed during the AGM was the approval of the naming of stands at Wankhede Stadium – a proposal initially put forward by Mr Milind Narvekar and seconded by Mr Jitendra Awhad. The house unanimously approved the stand namings.”

Here are the newly approved stand names at Wankhede Stadium:

  • Grand Stand Level 3: Shri Sharad Pawar Stand
  • Grand Stand Level 4: Ajit Wadekar Stand
  • Divecha Pavilion Level 3: Rohit Sharma Stand

Rohit Sharma shares a long-standing connection with Wankhede Stadium. Having grown up in Mumbai, he represented the city in domestic cricket before making his debut for the Indian national team. The stadium also serves as the home ground for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL), a franchise Sharma captained to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 making them the league’s most successful side during his tenure.

Though he no longer leads the Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma remains an integral part of the squad for IPL 2025.
